Let's face it: most accountants and bookkeepers aren't looking to become software experts, but they still need to navigate some pretty complex tools to get their work done. That's where I come in. As a translator at Exact*, my job is to take those technical, jargon-heavy features - things like Power BI or data visualisation - and make them clear and accessible for people who care more about balancing the books than deciphering tech speak. Here are a few tips I've picked along the way for translating technical content into something accountants can actually use.
1. Keep it simple, but not too simple
The goal isn't to dumb down the content but to make it relatable. Accountants are smart - they just don't have time to decode tech lingo. Break down complex concepts into straightforward, digestible steps without losing the core of what needs to be understood.
2. Know your audience
Accountants and bookkeepers have a different mindset. They are numbers people, not software people. When I translate, I focus on using terms and examples they are familiar with from their world, not the tech world.
3. Focus on the user's needs
Users don't need a textbook on how software works; they need quick, practical information that helps them do their job. My strategy is to prioritise the most relevant details - what they actually need to know to get from point A to point B. No fluff, just actionable steps.
4. Consistency is key
One thing I always keep in mind is consistency. Technical software can be overwhelming on its own, so keeping the terminology consistent across the board helps reduce confusion. I make sure the language flows naturally throughout the interface, helping users feel more comfortable with the product over time.
Final thoughts
At the end of the day, translating for non-tech professionals like accountants is all about making their life easier. By keeping things clear, focused and consistent, I help ensure that the software works for them, not the other way around.
